Female Athlete of the Year: Courtney Wilson, Cloudland

In another close vote, Cloudland’s Courtney Wilson was the fan’s vote for the Female Athlete of the Year in our Best of Carter County Sports. Wilson wrapped up a solid career as she averaged 17 points and 10 rebounds per game in her senior season, and was named to the TSWA Class A All-State team. The Milligan College signee surpassed 1,500 points and 900 rebounds in her high school career. Elizabethton’s Thomas claims Best of CCS Male Athlete honor

The fans have spoken. After a tight race for the first-ever Carter County Sports Male Athlete of the Year award, rising Elizabethton senior tailback Ethan Thomas recorded the honor. Thomas was a workhorse for a team that went on to capture a Three Rivers Conference regular season after an end-of-the-year tilt against the Sullivan South, a 28-27 last second win. Best of CCS Coach of the Year

It was a three-man race, but Cloudland’s Matt Birchfield came out on top in the Best of Carter County Sports Coach of the Year category. Birchfield edged Elizabethton’s Len Dugger and Cloudland’s Brock Pittman in the category. Birchfield led his Cloudland girls basketball team to a 31-6 season including starting 16-2 to open the year. Best of Carter County Sports: Female Team of the Year

  Simply put, this was the most competitive category in the Best of Carter County Sports, but in the end it was the Elizabethton basketball team that edged Cloudland basketball to be named the Female Team of the Year. The Lady Cyclones claimed the first “major” sport state title (football, basketball, baseball and softball) since 1938 as they capped off a 32-3 season with the TSSAA Class AA State Championship. Best of Carter County Sports: Male Team of the Year

The first Best of Carter County Sports category set the trend for close votes. Narrowly edging out Hampton basketball and Elizabethton football, the 2014 Best of Carter County Sports Male Team of the Year is the Cloudland football team. The ‘Landers started the season 9-0 before falling in the season finale to Hampton in a thriller, and then was unable to rally late as they fell in the playoff second round to Midway.
