Simply put, this was the most competitive category in the Best of Carter County Sports, but in the end it was the Elizabethton basketball team that edged Cloudland basketball to be named the Female Team of the Year.

The Lady Cyclones claimed the first “major” sport state title (football, basketball, baseball and softball) since 1938 as they capped off a 32-3 season with the TSSAA Class AA State Championship.

Paced by sisters Kayla Marosites, who was named the MVP of the state tournament, and Kelci, Elizabethton won 10 of their first 11 games. After a loss at the Dorman Classic to host Dorman as well as a loss to one of the top Class AAA teams in the state Science Hill, Elizabethton reeled off 20 straight wins.

The postseason saw the Lady Cyclones closest game come against CAK in the Sectional, and dispatched Livingston Academy and Westview in thrillers in the first two rounds of the state tournament in Murfreesboro.

Elizabethton left no doubt in the championship game who was the better team as they cruised by Fulton to a 66-52 victory.

Sarah Robinson, Megan Pietrowski and the Marosites sisters were named to the All-State team, and Sarah Bradley recorded solid performances throughout the year to help guide Coach Len Dugger’s squad to a history making season.
