It is that time of the year where we honor the best of the Carter County sports scene from the past school year to kickoff summer.

We start the honors with our male team of the year and it was a tough decision among our staff. However, the Hampton basketball squad’s run to the state tournament was the key factor in the Bulldogs’ being named the Carter County Sports Male Team of the Year.

Ned Smith’s team recorded an impressive 28-8 mark on the season while being ranked inside the AP Class A basketball top 10 all season.

Hampton recorded 15 straight wins to advance to Murfreesboro before falling in a 57-53 heartbreaker to Union City while being the major underdog. Despite an 8-2 mark in region play, Hampton finished second to South Greene, who handed the Bulldogs their only two losses on the year in conference play.

However, that sparked the Hampton squad in the postseason by rolling through the district and region tournaments.

A thrilling 88-80 overtime victory in the substate over Meigs County punched the ticket to the state tournament for the second straight year.
