The ETSU football team returns to action this Thursday night when the Buccaneers host Maryville College. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m., at Kermit Tipton Stadium.
LAST TIME OUT FOR THE BUCS
ETSU returned to the gridirion for the first time in 4,303 days last Thursday night when a capacity crowd of 8,217 fans saw the Buccaneers host Kennesaw State at Kermit Tipton Stadium … ETSU, who played its first game since defeating The Citadel on a game-winning field goal on Nov. 22, 2003, led 13-7 following a 12-yard touchdown run by Jajuan Stinson (Knoxville, Tenn.) midway through the second quarter; however, the Owls – who were playing their first football game in program history – rattled off 49 consecutive points to secure a 56-16 victory … ETSU freshman kicker JJ Jerman (Seymour, Tenn.) was a perfect 3-of-3 on field goal attempts and recorded the first points of the game with a 36-yard field goal at the 6:12 mark of the first quarter … Stinson led the running backs with seven carries for 34 yards and also caught three passes for 52 yards … Austin Herink (Cleveland, Tenn.) got the starting nod at quarterback and threw for 132 yards (14-of-22), while Nick Sexton (Seymour, Tenn.) also saw time behind center and finished 7-of-17 for 98 yards and two interceptions … Cole West (Oneida, Tenn.) led the Buccaneer defense with 9.5 tackles and Domenique Williams (Charlotte, N.C.) totaled 114 yards on five kickoff returns.
Maryville is coming off a 43-17 win over Berry on Saturday afternoon in Maryville … The Scots combined for 465 total yards on offense (283 yards rushing/182 yards passing), while the defense picked off three passes and forced one fumble … Senior quarterback Evan Pittenger, who has led the Scots to a pair of USA South titles, entered the 2015 season with 324 completions in 31 career games (2nd in MC history), while also posting a 56.1 success rate — a pace that leads all past field generals … His 26 career passing touchdowns ranks third, while his athleticism has allowed him to rush for an additional 22 career scores, ranking him third in career rushing TD’s … On Saturday, Pittenger went 11-for-18 with 143 yards, two touchdowns and one interception, while rushing for 56 yards on six carries and one score … Junior running back Trenton Shuler carried the ball 17 times for 132 yards and had one touchdown … Last season, Maryville’s offense averaged 408.2 yards per contest, while averaging 271.5 rushing yards per game — a mark that ranked 10th nationally … The Scots led the USA South in four different rushing categories behind a stout, senior-laden offensive line that ranked 23rd nationally with only one sack per outing … That line led the way for Maryville’s third-largest individual rushing effort in school history, as Shuler had 1,046 yards on 182 carries for 12 touchdowns … Shuler’s touchdowns ranked him 36th in the nation … Maryville’s starting offense on Saturday consisted of four seniors, four juniors and three sophomores, while the Scots started five seniors, two juniors, two sophomores and two freshman on defense.
Thursday marks the 24th all-time meeting between the two programs … ETSU leads the series, 15-8, while it marks the first meeting since the Bucs’ 40-0 win back in 1957… ETSU has won four straight in the series, which began in 1922.
