Bulldogs roll past Sweetwater

Hampton’s rushing attack stayed on track.

The Bulldogs scored 32 points in the second quarter to pull away and never look back in a 54-7 victory over Sweetwater in the TSSAA Class 2A playoffs.


Hampton will travel to Austin East, who dispatched Gatlinburg-Pittman on Friday night.

HHS started quickly as Hunter Davenport scored on a 62-yard run in the game’s opening minute. Sweetwater, however, answered quarter as Brett Spurgeon took the ensuing kickoff 95 yards for the touchdown.

Davenport scored his second touchdown of the night on a 54-yard run with just under five minutes to play in the first as Hampton took a 16-7 lead into the second quarter.

The Bulldogs turned it on in the second.

Dakota Cruley caught a 15-yard touchdown pass from Jason Russell, and Adam McClain scored on a 38-yard run. Davenport escaped for an 84-yard touchdown with 4:19 on the clock. The final score of the half came when Russell hit Chris Holtsclaw for a 26-yard pass as HHS led 48-7 at the half.

Russell hit Davenport for a 67-yard touchdown to cap off the scoring in the third quarter.

Davenport finished with 238 yards on seven carries, while McClain had 113 yards on 17 carries. Russell finished 5-of-8 passing for 146 yards and three touchdowns. The QB also added 31 yards on the ground.

As a team, Hampton outgained Sweetwater 574-194.
