Burrow, Weaver power Unaka to advance

With a strong second half, Unaka moved onto to play another game.

The Lady Rangers used a 16-0 run to pull away and never looked back as they advanced with a 55-25 victory over North Greene in the District 1-A Girls tournament at Daniel Boone.


With the win, Unaka moves on to face top-seed South Greene on Saturday at 4 p.m.

The Rangers opened the game with points from Lexi Garland and Kaitlyn Burrow. The Lady Huskies responded to trade shots, but the Lady Rangers saw Erika Potter score three straight points to give the Lady Rangers an 11-6 lead at the end of the first quarter.

NG and the Lady Rangers continued to trade shots throughout the second as Unaka held a 22-16 advantage at the half.

North Greene’s Jacinth Crawford hit back-to-back shots to open the third quarter. However, the Lady Rangers took over from there.

Katlyn Weaver kicked off a 16-0 run that lasted for the remaining six minutes of the third quarter. In that stretch, Weaver had five points and Burrow added four points to push the UHS lead to 40-21.

Potter and Weaver added points to open the final quarter before Crawford but NG back on the board.

Unaka maintained control as they outscored the Lady Huskies 11-2 in the final six minutes.

Burrow led the way for Unaka with 12 points. Weaver finished with 11 points. Potter scored nine points in the game.

Crawford tallied 18 points to lead North Greene.
