After a battle in the first half, Cloudland delivered a knockout punch.

The ‘Landers used a strong third quarter to take a 64-39 victory over University High on Friday night in the District 1-A Quarterfinals at Daniel Boone High School. With the win, CHS advances to play North Greene in Saturday’s semifinals at 8:30 p.m., and also secured a Region 1-A berth.

The first half was a back-and-forth battle.

Cloudland saw the Bucs take an early lead before Noah Arnett and Robert Leeper hit shots to give CHS an 11-9 lead midway through the quarter. UH battled back, but Cloudland used a Preston Benfield buzzer-beater trey to take an 18-15 advantage into the second quarter.

The teams traded shots to open the period before the Bucs methodically cut into the ‘Lander lead to pull within 22-21 with 2:24 left in the half.

Jason Potter and Benfield, however, pushed Cloudland’s lead to 29-24 at the break.

The second half was all Cloudland.

Leeper and Benfield scored quickly to push the lead to 9 points. That kicked off a 21-2 run that put CHS in control. The ‘Landers led 54-30 going into the fourth quarter. Any thoughts of an UH comeback were quickly erased as Cloudland extended the lead to 32 points in the opening minutes of the fourth.

Leeper led Cloudland with 23 points, while Benfield had 21 points.

Joseph Harless led UH with 16 points.
