The end of an era in Roan Mountain has come to a close.

Cloudland’s Matt Birchfield has stepped down as the head coach of the girls’ basketball program ending a lengthy run at the helm of one of the area’s most prestigious programs. Sources to Carter County Sports confirmed earlier reports of Birchfield’s resignation.

Lucas Andrews, who served as an assistant on this year’s squad, is set to replace Birchfield as head coach.

Birchfield served as head coach for 14 seasons after coming to Cloudland as an assistant in 2000-2001. During that time, Birchfield led the Lady ‘Landers to five state appearances including back-to-back trips in 2012 and 2013 as well as in 2002 and 2003. Cloudland also advanced to four additional substate games with Birchfield at the helm.

Birchfield will continue in his role as athletic director for the high school.

Cloudland finished this past season with a 10-18 mark.
