Cyclones fall in OT, Lady Cyclones run past SE

It was a fierce battle inside Treadway Gymnasium. Unfortunately for the Cyclones, the Patriots came out a point ahead.

Elizabethton fell one point short in a 49-48 overtime loss to Sullivan East on Friday night in overtime. In the girls’ game, the Lady Cyclones ran away right before half and never looked back in a 62-34 win.

The boys’ game saw the teams trade baskets early as EHS held a slim 12-10 lead after a quarter of play. The Cyclones extended the lead to three points at the break.

The intense game remained the same in the second half as neither team could pull away from the other. After the game entered the final quarter tied at 33, the teams played to a draw in regulation.

Michael Robinson struck early in the extra period for Elizabethton with two quick baskets, but the Patriots quickly responded to tie the game. Gavin Grubb hit the game winning free throw with four seconds remaining to send the Patriots to the win.

Bo Pless had 19 points to lead the Cyclones, while Robinson added 16 points. Jalen Smith added six points.

The Lady Cyclones used a late second quarter run to pull away from the Lady Patriots. After taking a 15-10 lead into the second quarter, Sullivan East pulled back within one near the midpoint of the quarter. However, Kayla Marosites and the Lady Cyclones responded and pushed the lead to 29-18 at the break.

Elizabethton doubled up the Lady Patriots in the third and fourth quarter to leave no doubt.

Marosites finished with 32 points, while Emily Schubert had 11 points. Haley Burleson had seven points for Elizabethton.
