Cyclones, ‘Landers ranked in AP poll

The first Tennessee Associated Press Prep Football rankings of 2018 saw two Carter County teams ranked inside the top 10.

In Class 4A, Elizabethton was ranked No. 6 after the thrilling win over Science Hill. The Cyclones, who received one first-place vote, were 10 points behind No. 5 Springfield.


Region 1-4A foe Greeneville claimed the top spot overwhelmingly with 148 points after rolling past Dobyns-Bennett. Anderson County and Haywood rounded out the top three.

In Class A, Cloudland was ranked No. 8 after the hard-fought loss at Gatlinburg-Pittman. The ‘Landers tallied 42 points in the poll – 15 points behind No. 7 Coalfield.

Greenback claimed 13 of 14 first-place votes to take the top spot, while South Pitt and Cornersville were second and third, respectively.

Other local teams ranked included Johnson County (No. 7 in Class 3A) – who is set to host Hampton on Friday night – and Sullivan North (received votes in Class 2A).

Both Cloudland and Elizabethton will be in action on Friday night as the ‘Landers will travel to North Greene and the Cyclones will host South Greene.
