Elizabethton boys’ basketball advanced in thrilling fashion on Friday night.
The Cyclones took a 60-53 overtime victory over Sullivan South in the District 1-AA tournament first round at Elizabethton. EHS will take on Unicoi County in Saturday’s semifinals at 8 p.m., and also clinched a Region 1-AA berth with the win.
From the opening tip, it was a back-and-forth tilt.
The teams traded points as Adam Cornett scored 11 points in the first quarter to help EHS take a 20-17 advantage into the second quarter. South, however, jumped ahead in the next eight minutes by outscoring Elizabethton 13-2 in the period. That run allowed the Rebels to take a 30-22 advantage into the half.
The Cyclones, however, quickly repaid the favor in the second half.
Elizabethton opened the third quarter on an 11-0 run to regain the advantage. The run was sparked by Eric Wilson and Parker Hughes – who hit big baskets to help EHS jump back ahead.
The teams continued to trade points as the Cyclones held a 38-34 lead going to the eighth quarter. In the final stanza, neither team was able to get any breathing room and it took an extra four minutes to decide the winner.
South scored on confusion to open the extra period, but that was the only bucket they would score as EHS reeled off nine straight points for the win.
Cornett led Elizabethton with 18 points. Hughes had 11 points for the Cyclones.
