District 1-A Softball: Unaka wins in opener; Cloudland falls

It was a split night for county teams at the District 1-A Softball Tournament on Monday.

Unaka picked up a 6-1 victory over University High while Cloudland dropped a 9-2 decision to North Greene.


The Lady Rangers will look to claim a spot in the District 1-A title game against North Greene on Tuesday at 7 p.m., while Cloudland will look to keep their season alive against UH at 5 p.m. Both games will be played at Unaka.

For the Lady Rangers, they jumped out early by scoring two runs in the first and three more over the next two innings.

Corrie Schuettler pitched a dominant game inside the circle as she allowed just three hits and one unearned run on nine strikeouts.

Erika Potter was 4-for-4, while Madison Ensor, Katlyn Weaver and Sarah Tipton had two hits apiece. In all, Unaka tallied 13 hits.

The Lady ‘Landers were unable to recover from an early deficit as NG scored six runs in the first inning.

Cloudland got on the board in the fourth as Kris Bare scored Gracie Freeman and then CHS added a run in the sixth as Jasmine Birchfield crossed home plate.

The Lady Huskies, however, secured the win in the bottom of the sixth.
