Elizabethton storms past Unicoi

A strong, orange and white gust of wind was able to touch land inside Gentry Stadium.

Behind a stalwart effort on both sides of the ball, Elizabethton was able to capture a 35-0 Mountain 8 Conference victory against Unicoi County on Friday night in Erwin.

The Cyclones improve to 3-1 on the year with a 2-0 spotless mark in league play while the Blue Devils (2-3) fall to 1-1.

Cyclone quarterback Hunter Tyree got the ball rolling in the first, connecting with passing touchdowns to Drew Bowers for 17 yards and Conner Johnson for 50 yards.

The two scores allowed Elizabethton to take a 14-0 advantage into the second quarter.

Jalen Smith added a 24-yard reception for a score in the second while Jeremiah Turner added a 3-yard power run to give Elizabethton a 28-0 score at the half.

Jacob Turner added the final score Elizabethton on the ground in the fourth quarter.

Tyree finished the night going 15-for-22 through the air for 277 yards, with three touchdowns and an interception. Smith added six catches for 70 yards. Smith was joined by Bowers and Johnson as both also had over 70 receiving yards in the game. Bowers had four catches for 77 yards while Johnson added 78 yards on four catches.

On the ground, Turner had 10 carries for a team-high 34 yards.

The Cyclones outgained Unicoi County 381-102 offensively, while the Blue Devils were able to win the rushing battle – 102 to 96 with Cameron Higgins leading the way with 14 carries for 51 yards.

Elizabethton’s defense limited Unicoi to 102 total offensive yards in the game.

The Cyclones return to action with a trip in Week 6 to Bristol for non conference action at the Stone Castle against Tennessee High.
