Elizabethton softball wouldn’t be denied on Wednesday.

The Lady Cyclones battled back to take a 5-2 victory over Sweetwater in the Class AA Softball Tournament. Elizabethton advances to play the loser of the Creek Wood and CAK game on Thursday morning in an elimination game at 10 a.m. CT. With a win, Elizabethton would also play at 4 p.m., CT.

After the first pitch was delayed due to rain, the game was also stopped for over an hour after the second inning as rain struck again.

Sweetwater struck first with a leadoff home run in the top fourth to take a 1-0 lead. The Lady Cyclones, however, answered quickly as Macie West knocked Macie Herrmann across home plate to tie the game at 1-1.

After the Lady Wildcats went quietly in the top of the fifth, the Elizabethton offensive attack got cranking. Abbi McKinney hit a three-run home run that also brought Kira Dillard and Haley Fair across home plate to give EHS a 4-1 lead. Lauren Brickey pushed Herrmann across the plate with a single as Elizabethton took a 5-1 lead going to the sixth.

Sweetwater added a home run in the top of the sixth, but that was as close as the Lady Cyclones would let them get.

West and Herrmann went 1-for-2 at the plate.

Kellie Cunningham picked up the win in the pitching circle. In a complete game effort, Cunningham allowed just two runs on four hits with two strikeouts.
