May, Elizabethton track ready for Spring Fling

Katie May is going to lead the charge for Elizabethton track team.

May will kick off the TSSAA Class A/AA Track Championships on Monday as she competes in the Pentathlon in Murfreesboro, Tenn. May will then be joined by eight of her teammates later in the week as they chase state titles for the Lady Cyclones.

Happy Valley will also send Kaitlyn Simerly to compete in the pole vault at the state championships.
May earned a wildcard spot in the pentathlon as she will join West Greene’s Cheyenne Upton as representatives from Northeast Tennessee.

May will also compete in the triple jump. The senior enters the event as the three-seed with a mark of 34-06.75.

In addition to the individual events, May will partner Heather Feuchtenbeger, Kyra McCrary and Kaitlyn Matheson in the 4×400 relay. The group received the last wildcard bid in the state, which is based on the best times in all three sections combined that is not qualified, with a mark of 4:20.98.

The Elizabethton relays team will also see Abbi Pierce, Maci Shell, Haley Keylon and Feuchtenbeger will compete in the 4×800 relay as the six-seed with a mark of 10:17.04.

Individually, Emily Schubert will also compete for the Lady Cyclones. Schubert enters the meet as the two-seed in the discus throw with a mark of 106-11.

Simerly will enter the pole vault as the eight-seed despite having the same mark (7-06.00) as the three competitors in front of her.

The TSSAA Track Championships are being held at Middle Tennessee State’s Dean A. Hayes Track and Soccer Stadium. May will compete on Monday, while the rest of the participants will open the meet on Wednesday.
