Hampton kicked off the Michael Lunsford era in style.

The Bulldogs amassed 453 yards on the ground to steamroll their way to a 46-12 victory over Avery County (N.C.) on Friday night at JC Campbell Stadium.

Hampton struck early as Hunter Davenport scored on an 18-yard run to cap off a four-minute drive. Senior Adam McClain added a five-yard touchdown run in the first quarter to give HHS a 16-0 lead after a quarter of play.

The second quarter left no doubt.

McClain broke free for an 85-yard touchdown scamper in the frame’s opening minutes, and then found the end zone with 5:55 to play in the half to push the Bulldog lead to 30-0. After Avery got on the board with a pick-six, Davenport scored on a 62-yard run with just over two minutes left in the first half.

Dakota Sanchez rumbled his way into the end zone with 1:01 on the clock to give Hampton a 46-6 lead at the break.

With a running clock, Avery got the lone score of the second half when Christian Hicks returned a punt 44 yards for the score.

McClain finished the game with 172 yards rushing on 14 carries, while Davenport had 115 yards on eight carries. Jason Russell had seven carries for 71 yards. Sanchez added 31 yards on four carries.

Russell finished the game 3-for-4 passing for 99 yards.

The defensive unit held the Vikings to just 80 total offensive yards, while the Bulldogs tallied 552 total offensive yards in the game.

Hampton returns to action next Friday with a trip to Johnson County.
