Hampton made sure that there was no doubt.
After being clipped by Unicoi County in the season opener last season, the Bulldogs steamrolled the Blue Devils as they captured a 48-12 victory at Gentry Stadium in Erwin.
Hampton struck first as Adam McClain ran into the endzone eight yards out, but Unicoi’s Luke Fronckoski answered from 20-yards. However, the extra point was missed as the Bulldogs held a 7-6 advantage.
On the next possession, Coby Jones showed off his arm as he tossed a 31-yard touchdown pass, and then the Bulldogs recovered a quick kick. Dylan Ford was on the receiving end of a Jones’ 19-yard pass after the kick to push Hampton up 21-6 at the end of the first quarter.
McClain recorded an interception on defense for Hampton, and then caught a 51-yard touchdown pass quickly in the second stanza. Fronckoski dived into the endzone from three yards out for the Blue Devils, but Jerry Lunsford answered for Hampton on their next drive as the two-point conversion gave the Bulldogs a 35-12 lead at the half.
In the third quarter, Lunsford struck again with an interception and raced to the house as he returned it 53-yards for the score, and Hampton held a 41-12 advantage heading into the fourth quarter.
The final quarter saw Hampton add another score to complete the rout.
