Hampton celebrated Senior Night in style.

The Bulldogs erased a 16-point second quarter deficit to take a 66-55 victory over Unicoi County on Saturday night. The Lady Bulldogs used a strong third quarter to pull away for a 47-36 win over the Lady Blue Devils.


In the boys’ game, Hampton saw the Blue Devils start quickly as Unicoi took an early 22-7 lead. Wyatt Lyons helped HHS close the gap to 26-14 entering the second, but the Blue Devils quickly extended the lead to 16 points.

Dru Owens drained a 3-pointer to kick off a 12-2 Hampton run as the Bulldogs pulled within seven points at the half.

A 12-2 Hampton run in the third quarter saw the Bulldogs tie the game at 41-41, and then an Owens trey put Hampton in the lead for the first time. Hampton clung to a 46-45 lead at the end of the third quarter.

After Unicoi regained a one-point lead, Owens hit back-to-back-to-back 3-pointers to five Hampton a nine-point lead. That proved to be the difference as the Bulldogs secured the win.

Owens finished with 18 points, while Charlie Butler scored 12 points. Jose Velasquez had 11 points. Dakota Crumley and Lyons had nine points apiece.

The girls’ game saw neither team able to pull away in the first half as Hampton maintained an 18-17 advantage at the half.

Megan Garland and Alexus Grubbs helped the Lady Bulldogs start the second half quickly as the duo pushed the lead to 10 points. A late Lady Blue Devil basket closed the gap ti eight points at the end of the third.

Hampton, however, wouldn’t be denied as a 9-0 run in the closing stares secured the win for the Lady Bulldogs.

Garland had 16 points to lead the Lady Bulldogs, while Grubbs added 14 points. Hope Bridgeman tallied five points in the win.
