Hampton kicked off the District 1-A tournament in style.

The top-seeded Bulldogs pulled away in the second quarter and never back en route to a 58-43 victory over South Greene in the District 1-A Boys semifinals.

Hampton will play the winner of the Cloudland/North Greene game in Tuesday’s championship tilt and clinches a home Region 1-A tournament game.

Hampton jumped out early behind buckets from Jose Velasquez and Dakota Crumley. After the teams traded shots, Hampton used a strong 9-2 run to take an 18-10 advantage into the second quarter.

Adam McClain hit back-to-back shots open the second. That sparked a 10-3 Hampton run, but South Greene answered with a 7-2 run to close the gap to 30-20 at the half.

Velasquez scored six straight Hampton pints to open the second. That helped set the stage for Hampton to leave no doubt as HHS extended the lead to 18 points going into the fourth.

In the fourth, Hampton maintained control to take the victory.

Velasquez had 19 points to lead Hampton. Crumley had 12 points, while Charlie Butler tallied nine points.
