Hampton girls outlast Cloudland

ROAN MOUNTAIN, Tenn. – The Lady Bulldogs kept playing their game on Tuesday night. In the end, it proved to be the winning plan.

Hampton controlled the tempo for most of the game to take a 49-37 victory over Cloudland on Tuesday night inside Sonny Smith Gymnasium.

Cloudland opened the game quickly as Kendall Mull took the opening tip to the basket, but Alexus Grubbs answered for the Lady Bulldogs. The Lady ‘Landers extended the lead to 8-4 in part to five Peyton Johnson points. However, Hampton came storming back with buckets by Alexis Bowers and Grubbs to take a 12-11 lead into the second quarter.

Faith Russell opened the second quarter with a Cloudland basket, but Kim Swearingen and Bowers added two points apiece to counter. The teams traded points buckets before Hampton went on a 6-0 run sparked by four Grubbs points. A Shian Strickland trey cut the Hampton lead to 24-21 at the half.

In the third quarter, Russell once again opened the quarter with a jumper for the Lady ‘Landers, but Hampton responded with a Shyanne Tuelle 3-pointer and Madi Weir basket. Russell and Johnson added points for CHS. A

Grubbs jumper gave the Lady Bulldogs a 34-28 lead entering the final quarter.

After another Grubbs basket for Hampton, Cloudland saw Mull hit a 3-pointer to close the gap to six points.

However, Hampton ended the game on a 12-5 run to secure the win.
Grubbs finished with 14 points while Swearingen added 11 points. Cloudland was paced by Russell and Johnson with nine points apiece, while Mull tossed in eight points.

Hampton will host Unaka on Friday night, while Cloudland will host North Greene.
