Hampton sweeps past UH

A pair of strong second halves propelled Hampton to a sweep of the district foe University High.

The Bulldogs picked up a 71-47 win over the Bucs while the Lady Bulldogs pulled away for a 57-42 win.

In the boys’ game, Hampton opened to a 17-15 first-quarter lead, but the Bulldogs were unable to get any more breathing room in the second. The Bulldogs maintained a 31-30 halftime lead.

The third quarter saw both teams trade shots. HHS maintained a 41-38 lead. However, the Bulldogs took control in the fourth. Charlie Butler and Coby Jones sparked Hampton to a 30-point frame as the defense limited the Bucs to just nine points.

Jones led the way with 15 points, while Butler added 11. Dakota Crumley and Andrews had eight points. Nathan Norris and Wyatt Lyons added seven points apiece.

The girls’ opener set the tone for the evening as Hampton held a 10-7 lead at the end of the first quarter and a 19-16 advantage at the half.

However, the Lady Bulldogs took control in the third quarter by outscoring the Lady Bucs 20-9 that proved to the be difference in the game.

Alexus Grubbs had a game-high 20 points. Megan Garland tossed in 12 points, while Shy Tuelle added nine points. Hope Bridgeman tossed in six points.
