Hampton came up short in their quest for a District 1-A title. It wasn’t, however, because of a lack of fight.

The Lady Bulldogs fell 79-58 to top-seed South Greene in the District 1-A Championship at Daniel Boone High School.

Hampton was dealt with adversity in the game’s second half as an injury to Hampton standout Shy Tuelle marred the game in the third quarter and Alexus Grubbs fouled out in the opening minute of the fourth quarter.

The Lady Bulldogs battled back from an early 4-0 deficit as Leanne Quinn and Grubbs knocked down shots. That started a 12-0 run that was capped by seven straight from Tuelle. After the Lady Rebels pulled back within two, Kinzey Hill drained a pair of 3-pointers to extend the Hampton lead back out. HHS held a 20-14 advantage after a quarter of play.

In the second quarter, the teams traded points as Hampton held on to the advantage. South Greene closed the gap to two points, but Megan Garland and Tuelle hit baskets to push the lead back out in the final minute.

Four straight South Greene points closed the Hampton lead to 36-33 at the half.

Grubbs and Garland opened the third quarter scoring.

The game was paused near the four-minute mark after Tuelle was injured on a collision going for a loose ball.

South Greene got the motor running late in the quarter reeling off a 20-4 run in the closing minutes – bookmarking shots from Grubbs and Garland.

The fourth quarter saw SG keep the offense moving as they scored the first 15 points of the frame. Hampton continued to battle as Hill and Kaysi Royston in the closing minutes.

Tuelle tallied 18 points, while Grubbs added 13 points. Hill finished with 12 points. Garland scored seven points in the game.

Braelyn Wykle had 25 points to lead all scorers.

Hampton is set to host a Region 1-A quarterfinal on Friday night.
