Happy Valley takes two from Cloudland

It was a pair of thrillers on Warrior Hill.

Happy Valley picked up a varsity sweep of county foe Cloudland on Tuesday night. The Lady Warriors battled back in the final minute to force overtime before taking a 73-69 victory over the Lady ‘Landers, while Happy Valley fended off a Cloudland charge to take a 62-57 win.


In the girls’ game, the teams battled back and forth. The Lady ‘Landers maintained an 18-16 lead at the end of the first quarter. The teams continued to swap the lead throughout the second as HV clinged to a 33-31 advantage at the half.

The Lady Warriors opened up a six point lead in the first half of the third. The Lady ‘Landers continued to battle as a 6-2 run closed the gap to 47-45. In the fourth, the roles were reversed as Cloudland ran out to a five-point lead. The Lady Warriors, however, kept fighting and Emily Whitaker forced overtime with a shot with 2.5 seconds remaining.

Shalyn Whitson opened the scoring in the extra period for Happy Valley, but Lisa Ellis responded for Cloudland with four-straight points. The Lady Warriors stopped the run with buckets from Bayley McGee and Whitson. CHS was able to trim the gap back to one point. However, HV held on for the win.

McGee tallied 18 points for HV to lead all scorers. Whitman tallied 17 points in the game. Hayley Green and Whitaker had nine points apiece.

Stachia Wilson led the Lady ‘Landers with 15 points, and Shian Strickland tallied 12 points. Trinity Vines had 10 points. Donrae Taylor also added nine points to the CHS cause.

In the varsity nightcap, Happy Valley used a 21-6 run in the first quarter to take control of the game. Cloudland had scored the game’s first eight points. The Warriors held serve in the second quarter as they took a 29-21 advantage into the half.

After HV extended the lead to double-digits, Cloudland fought to pull within 42-35 after three quarters of play.

The final quarter saw Cloudland closed within a possession, but the Warriors kept the ‘Landers at bay.

HV’s Sam Blevins led all scorers with 19 points, while Brayden Sams added 16 points. Chris Young and Noah Worley had nine points apiece.

Preston Benfield had 15 points to lead Cloudland. Robert Leeper scored 12 points, while Brinkley Mull and Josh Blair had 10 points each.
