HV upset bids come up short at East

Happy Valley had a pair of upsets on the mind on Friday night. However, Sullivan East had other plans.

The Warriors were unable to hold on in the final minute as the Patriots took a 62-59 victory. The Lady Patriots picked up a 66-52 win over the Lady Warriors.


In the boys’ game, Happy Valley went toe-to-toe with the Patriots.

After trailing 18-14 at the end of the first quarter, the Warriors outscored East 15-9 in the second quarter. That put HV in front 29-27 at the half.

The teams played even in the third quarter as Dillion Barlow and Bryce Carter and six points apiece in the frame. HV held a 46-44 lead after the third quarter as the Patriots’ Gavin Grubb hit a four-point play to close the gap.

In the final quarter, it was a battle over the eight minutes. Happy Valley had a chance to tie the game in the final minute but was unable to get back in front of the Patriots.

Barlow led HV with 16 points, while Carter had 12 points. Brayden Sams and Chris Young had nine and eight points, respectively.

Grubb led all scorers with 22 points – 20 of which came in the second half.

In the girls’ game, neither team could pull away early. Sullivan East maintained a 12-10 advantage at the end of the first quarter. The Lady Patriots, however, used a strong run to extend the lead to nine points during the second quarter.

Happy Valley made a couple of charges in the third quarter as they trimmed the lead to three points. However, Sullivan East took a 47-37 lead into the final eight minutes and hung on for the win.

Kate Roberts had 13 points to lead Happy Valley. Adrienne Henegar had 12 points, while Emily Whitaker had 10 points.

Megan Addison led SE with 16 points.
