For the second straight week, the Lady Bulldogs knocked off a top 10 team in the state.
Alexus Grubbs hit two free throws with 8.4 seconds remaining to push Hampton to a 50-48 victory over Class A No. 2 South Greene on Tuesday night. In the game, Grubbs also scored her 1,000th point for her career.
Nathan Norris tallied 27 points as the Hampton boys scored early and often to take a 97-46 victory over the Rebels.
After the teams traded shots to open the first quarter, Shyanne Tuelle and Grubbs hit shots to power HHS to a 13-10 lead. The Rebels answered to regain the lead shortly, but Kenzie Hill and Tuelle stopped the run as Hampton extended the advantage to 25-19 at the half.
In the third quarter, Bree Hoyle, Grubbs and Hill hit shots to give the Lady Bulldogs a 10-point lead. The Lady Rebels, however, kept in touch with the Lady Bulldogs as Hampton maintained a 44-38 lead at the end of the third.
South Greene slowly pulled back into the game, and tied the game at 48-48 with 17.1 seconds remaining with a pair of Morgan Williams free throws. Grubbs, however, wouldn’t let the Lady Bulldogs be denied as she was fouled on a drive to the basket and knocked down both free throws. The Hampton defense kept SG off the board to take a win.
Grubbs led the way with 19 points, while Tuelle had 15 points. Hill added 12 points.
Williams led SG with 13 points.
In the boys’ game, Charlie Butler and Norris helped set the tone early as the Bulldogs took a 12-9 lead just over three minutes into the game. Hampton continued to frustrate the SG offense with the press as Hampton led 28-14 at the end of the first quarter.
The Bulldogs kept their foot on the pedal to start the second quarter as a 23-0 run pushed the lead to 37 points. From there, the Hampton kept SG at bay.
Norris’ 27 points led all scorers, and Coby Jones tallied 17 points. Chris Holtsclaw and Butler scored 13 and 11 points, respectively.
Hampton will travel to Cloudland on Friday.
