In a game that featured 20 lead changes and 11 ties, it was another classic battle between the Hampton-Cloudland girls’ basketball team on Monday night.

The Lady ‘Landers edged Hampton 56-53 in the consolation game of the District 1-A game at Daniel Boone High School. The Cloudland win snaps a nine-game losing streak to the Lady Bulldogs.

Both teams will hit the road for the Region 1-A quarterfinals on Friday night.

In the first quarter, neither team was able to get an advantage in the early going. Shy Tuelle added early points along with Haley Carden for the Lady Bulldogs, while Cloudland countered with buckets from Jasmine Birchfield and Trinity Vines. Hampton saw a Carden bucket kick start a 6-2 run in the closing minutes of the stanza as the Lady Bulldogs held an 18-14 lead going into the second quarter.

Cloudland opened the second stanza on a run of their own as Abbey Gouge scored in the paint. That run allowed Cloudland to take a slim lead, but the Lady Bulldogs countered with four straight points from Stephanie Campbell. The teams traded points the rest of the way as Hampton held a slim 31-28 lead at the half.

The third quarter was much the same as the first half. Vines and J. Birchfield added back-to-back points midway through the stanza to put CHS back up. After Campbell added a bucket, the teams traded points once again as the third quarter ended in a 42-42 stalemate.

In the final eight minutes, the teams continued to swap the lead as Tuelle drained a shot to give HHS a 50-48 lead with just under four minutes to play. Kenzie Birchfield knocked a trey on the other end and Stacia Wilson added a bucket to put CHS up with 2:36 remaining.

Hampton was able to close the gap to one point in the final minute with a pair of free throws from Leanne Guinn, but Vines and Megan Lunsford knocked down a free throw apiece to ice the win for Cloudland.

Vines led Cloudland with 18 points, while Lunsford had 10 points. J. Birchfield added nine points.

Campbell and Tuelle had 16 points apiece for Hampton, and Hannah Collins had nine points for the Lady Bulldogs.
