The Cloudland girls’ basketball team gave it all they had.

The Lady ‘Landers were unable to overcome late foul trouble in a 50-40 loss to North Greene in the District 1-A Girls Semifinals at Daniel Boone High School. Cloudland will square off against either Unaka or Hampton in Monday’s consolation game.

After North Greene took a 6-0 lead to open the game, Cloudland answered quickly with a 6-0 run of their own punctuated with back-to-back shots by Jasmine Birchfield. Trinity Vines countered a pair of NG shots – including a trey in the final minute to give CHS a 12-11 advantage going into the second quarter.

Megan Lunsford opened the scoring in the second quarter, but the Lady Huskies went on a 10-4 run to take a 21-18 lead with just under three minutes to play. Kenzie Birchfield evened the game up at 21-21, but Katie Bolton hit back-to-back shots to give North Greene a 27-21 halftime lead.

In the third quarter, the Birchfield duo struck for Cloudland to pull back within one point. North Greene, however went on an 8-3 run – with K. Birchfield providing the lone CHS score. A pair of Stacia Wilson buckets closed the Lady ‘Lander gap to four points going to the fourth quarter.

Cloudland kept pushing in the final eight minutes of play. However, they were unable to get back within striking distance in the final minute.

K. Birchfield had 17 points, while J. Birchfield added 10 points for the Cloudland cause.
