The Unaka girls’ basketball team scored early and often to keep on moving in the postseason.

The Lady Rangers cruised to a 66-40 victory over University High on Friday night in the District 1-A Tournament at Daniel Boone High School. The win also secures a Region 1-A berth for Unaka.

On Saturday, Unaka will take on Hampton with a ticket to Tuesday’s championship tilt on the line at 7 p.m.

In the first quarter, the Lady Rangers hit the gas pedal early.

Lexi Garland opened the game with a jumper and Sarah Tipton scored five straight points to give UHS a 7-0 lead. UHS used that start to extend the lead to 21-7 after a quarter of play. The second quarter was much the same as Unaka outscored the Lady Bucs 16-5 in the period to take a 37-12 lead into the locker room at half.

Myah Parlier and Erika Potter made sure there was no thought of a comeback in the third quarter as the duo combined for 10 points – just two points shy of the combined UH total in the stanza.

From there, the Lady Rangers maintained the advantage en route to the win.

Parlier had 13 points to lead the Unaka scorers, while Potter and Garland had 10 points apiece.

Tipton and Whitehead had eight and seven points, respectively.
