Unaka used a big first inning to their advantage.

The Lady Rangers scored four runs in the first inning and never looked back as they took a 6-1 victory over Cloudland in Roan Mountain.

After Madison Pierce walked to open the game, Katlyn Weaver hit a two-run homerun to center field. Sarah Hardin also sent a pitch out of the part a batter later, and Madison Ensor crossed homeplate off a Taylor Shanks hit later in the inning to give Unaka a 4-0 lead after a half inning of play.

Kenzie Birchfield opened the home side of the first with a double, and Shian Strickland got on base for the Lady ‘Landers. However, Cloudland was unable to get the runs on the board.

Neither team was able to get anything going until Ensor touched Homeplate for Unaka in the fifth and Pierce scored in the top of the sixth. Cloudland got on the board in the final side as Johanna Johnson scored after she hit a triple to get on base.


Ensor went 2-for-3 at the plate to lead all batters, while Hardin and Weaver went 1-for-3. Haley Fair was 1-for-2 for Unaka.

Birchfield and Johnson were 1-for-3 for Cloudland.

In the pitching circle, Hardin allowed just one hit with four strikeouts for Unaka, while Corie Schuttler also allowed just one hit with four strikeouts.

Birchfield allowed two unearned runs on three hits with five strikeouts in six innings of work for Cloudland.
