Lady Warriors advance past Chuckey Doak

It was a seesaw affair on Friday night in Afton. However, the Lady Warriors had the winning edge.

Senior Kalee Johnson poured in 37 points to power Happy Valley to a 69-65 victory over Chuckey Doak in the Region 1-AA quarterfinals.

The win advances the Lady Warriors to a Region 1-AA semifinal against Elizabethton on Monday night at Grainger County.

HV jumped out to an early lead and took a 14-8 advantage into the second quarter. Johnson continued to score early and often for Happy Valley, and the Lady Warriors held a 33-25 advantage at the half.

Happy Valley opened the third quarter in style by quickly opening the lead to 14 points, but the Lady Black Knights slowly cut into the lead as HV held a 47-44 lead after three quarters of play.

The final quarter saw the Lady Warriors hold a slim lead before extending the lead back to seven points. After HV held a double-digit advantage, CD cut the lead to four points in the final minute before the Lady Warriors secured the win at the free throw line.

Kaitlyn Roberts added nine points for Happy Valley, while Bayley McGee scored seven points. Kenzie Davis and Emily Whitaker had six points apiece.

As a team, HV hit nine 3-pointers.
