The Cloudland basketball teams kicked off Christmas week with quite the presents.

Both CHS squads picked up non conference wins over Rockwood on Monday night inside Sonny Smith Gymnasium. The Lady ‘Landers held on for a 53-42 victory while the ‘Landers captured a 55-47 win over the Tigers.

In the girls’ game, Cloudland jumped out to a 5-0 lead with shots from Shian Strickland and Lisa Ellis. Rockwood, however, ended the quarter on a 5-0 run to take a 10-8 advantage into the second quarter.

Payton Johnson started the second with a jumpshot to tie the game, and Strickland and Ellis added a pair of 3-pointers to spark a 14-3 run to take a 22-15 lead. The Lady Tigers closed the gap to two points in the opening minutes of the third quarter. Cloudland answered as Patricia Singleton and Ellis helped the Lady ‘Landers regain a 34-28 lead after three quarters of play.

In the final quarter, Cloudland slowly pulled away to take the victory.

Strickland tallied a game high 22-points, while Ellis finished with nine points. P. Johnson ended the game with seven points. Johanna Johnson and Singleton had seven and six points, respectively.

The boys’ game saw the teams trade run early as Brinkley Mull and Colby Birchfield scored early for Cloudland. The Tigers, however, ended the period with a 4-0 run to take an 11-10 lead over CHS. The ‘Landers as well as Rockwood struggled to get anything going gong second quarter as Rockwood held an 18-16 lead at the half.

Dalton Vines jumpstarted the scoring in the third quarter, and Preston Benfield and Birchfield pushed Cloudland back into the lead. After the ‘Landers pushed the lead to nine points, Rockwood used a run to close the gap to 38-33 heading to the fourth quarter.

The final quarter saw Vines and Benfield hit big shots along with Birchfield to secure the win for Cloudland.

Birchfield had a game-high 19 points  Benfield tallied 11 points, and Vines finished with seven points. Chris Wagoner had six points.

Both Cloudland teams are slated to host KATCHEA on Tuesday evening in Roan Mountain.
