For the ‘Landers, it was mission accomplished.
Cloudland captured the No. 2 seed and more importantly a region berth with a 70-48 victory over South Greene on Friday night. The Lady ‘Landers, however, were unable to keep pace with the state’s No. 4 ranked team in an 83-50 loss to the Lady Rebels.
In the boys’ game, the ‘Landers had to overcome an early deficit as the Rebels took a 7-1 lead midway through the first quarter. Jesse Potter scored on an acrobatic lay-up and a 3-pointer to spark Cloudland to a run that gave them a 13-7 advantage at the end of the first quarter.
After the Rebels opened the second quarter scoring, Chris Wagoner and Colby Birchfield hit hots that saw CHS push the lead to 22-9. The teams traded points for the rest of the period as the ‘Landers held a 32-20 advantage at the half.
The second staff saw Cloudland stop any thought of a comeback.
Birchfield scored 11 points in the third quarter as CHS extended the lead to 15 points. From there, Cloudland slowly pulled away to take the win.
Birchfield led Cloudland with 18 points. Potter tallied nine points, while Dalton Vines added nine points. Freshman Josh Blair scored eight points in the game.
For the Lady ‘Landers, a slow start put them in a hole early as the Lady Rebels held a 12-5 lead midway through the first quarter, and a 25-11 lead after a quarter of play. However, Shian Strickland along with Stacia Wilson hit shots that helped Cloudland pull within eight points at the half.
The third quarter, however, saw South Greene pull away for good. The Lady Rebels held an 18-point lead at the end of the third and outscored CHS 24-9 in the fourth quarter.
Strickland had 20 points to lead Cloudland, while Trinity Vines added 13 points. Lisa Ellis and Wilson added six and five points, respectively.
