Pietrowski powers Elizabethton to TRC crown

ELIZABETHTON, Tenn – Elizabethton’s ladies encountered a blue and white resistance early, but kept their winning ways intact at the end.

Unicoi Conty trailed by one at the end of the first but a late run in the second quarter propelled the Lady Cyclones to a 62-47 victory inside John Treadway Gymnasium Tuesday night.

The win keeps Elizabethton’s record spotless at 22-0 on the year and 10-0 in the Three Rivers Conference, clinching the league title. ‘Betsy earned a No. 1 seed in the upcoming District 1-AA tournament and an automatic berth to the Region 1-AA tourney.

“Obviously, one of our goals is to win the conference,” Elizabethton head coach Len Dugger said. “These girls have goals as a team they want to accomplish but this was really huge for us knowing we’re going to the region tournament. We came out, played hard but maybe we didn’t execute the way we liked on each possession. We did a lot of good things and I’m proud of the kids.”

The Lady Blue Devils (12-11, TRC 6-4) used a Haley Webb 3-pointer to cut Elizabethton’s lead to one, 14-13, heading into the second quarter. Both teams traded buckets in the ensuing four minutes but the Lady Cyclones would go on a 10-3 run toward half to move their lead to 15 points, 37-23.

Post Megan Pietrowski had things going for her early, scoring 14 of her game-high 16 points in the first half while battle with UC post player Destinie Hayes. Hayes finished with 11 boards for the Lady Blue Devils.

Pietrowski gave praise to Hayes following the contest.

“She’s an amazing competitor,” she said. “She makes me play harder. We focused everything on defense so we knew we needed to get some stops tonights.”

Kelci Marosites joined her teammate in double figures with 15 points, eight in the first half, and finished with five assists and rebounds.

“It was important for us,” Marosites said. “We wanted to win tonight. This will help us going into the tournaments and hopefully win can continue it with a district title.”

Kayla Marosites and Sarah Robinson finished with nine points and rebounds apiece.

Emily Kiser, Emily Schubert, Melenda Perry and Haley Burleson each reached the scoring column for the Lady Cyclones. Schubert also added a block.

Webb finished as Unicoi County’s leading scorer with nine points while Hayes and Hannah Rice totaled eight apiece. Rice also tallied seven assists for the Lady Blue Devils.
