Twice as Nice: Lady Cyclones headed back to ‘Boro

The Lady Cyclones made sure they would be around to defend the Class AA title.

Kayla Marosites poured in 33 points as Elizabethton dispatched Gatlinburg-Pittman 68-52 in Class AA sectional action on Monday night inside Treadway Gymnasium. The Lady Cyclones will open the state tournament in Murfreesboro on Thursday against Westview at 3:45 CT.

Megan Pietrowski kicked off the game with an old-fashioned three-point play, and Sarah Robinson and Marosites added points to give Elizabethton an early 8-0 lead. A Kelci Marosites 3-pointer gave the Lady Cyclones a double-digit lead before the Lady Highlanders trimmed the lead to 17-7 at the end of the first quarter.

Ka. Marosites continued to have the hot hand shooting as she hit multiple shots to help Elizabethton extend the lead to 30-13. The Lady Cyclones continued to hold GP at bay to take a 35-24 lead into the locker room at halftime.

Melenda Perry and Pietrowski hit shots to open the second half for Elizabethton. Dannie Luczak and Gatlinburg-Pittman went on a run to pull within four points of the Lady Cyclones, but a Ka. Marosites

trey snapped the run. Elizabethton used a Sarah Robinson 3-pointer to take a 51-43 lead into the final period.

Elizabethton took control in the fourth quarter and never looked back. After shots from Ka. Marosites and Pietrowski, the Lady Cyclones ran out to a 14-point lead midway through the quarter. Free throws from Ke. Marosites and Perry iced the win and the state bid for Elizabethton.

Ka. Marosites had a game-high 33 points, while Ke. Marosites finished with 13 points. Pietrowski tossed in nine points. Robinson finished with eight points.

The Lady Highlanders were paced by Haris Price’s 15 points, while Luczak scored 14 points in the game.
