Unaka sweeps Hancock County

Unaka broke out the brooms on Friday night against Hancock County.

The Lady Rangers picked up a 60-26 victory over the Lady Indians, while the Unaka boys wrapped up the sweep with a 47-43 win over Hancock County.

In the girls’ game, Unaka jumped out early as Hannah Tipton scored eight first quarter points to power the Lady Rangers to a 21-4 lead. Sydney Markland added two treys in the second period as Unaka extended the lead to 31-12 at the half.

Lakin Sexton answered the bell for the Lady Indians in the third quarter as she tallied all nine of Hancock County’s third quarter points, but Unaka countered with five scorers in the period included four points from Sierra Wright. The Lady Rangers secured the win by outscoring Hancock County 16-5 in the final stanza.

Tipton led the way with 12 points, while Cheyenne Drew tallied 10 points. Ashley Doss tossed in nine points, while Markland and Wright finished with six points apiece.

Sexton had 17 points to pace the Lady Indians.

In the boys’ game, the Rangers had to record their second straight rally to take the win. The first quarter saw Unaka fall behind 12-5 to the Indians as Kyler Lewis tallied all five Unaka points. However, the Rangers powered back in the second stanza paced by seven Joe Searfoss points as the Rangers outscored Hancock County 19-5 in the game to take a 24-19 lead into the locker room at the half.

Searfoss continued to have the hot hand shooting as he scored nine of Unaka’s 10 third quarter points as the Rangers maintained a 34-28 lead entering the final period.

Hancock County made a late run, but Lewis and Searfoss hit late free throws to secure the win for Unaka.

Searfoss tallied 24 points to pace the way, while Lewis finished with 12 points. Travis Overdorf tallied six points in the game.

Hancock County was paced by Jacob Davidson’s 13 points.
