The Rangers and Lady Rangers picked up nonconference victories on Monday night, but the Happy Valley girls’ team was unable to keep the momentum going as they came up short in a heartbreaker.
Unaka 63, KACHEA 16 (Girls)
The Lady Rangers jumped out early and never looked back enroute to the victory. After taking a 17-2 lead in the first quarter, Unaka held a comfortable 32-6 lead at the half.
The Lady Wildcats were never able to get anything going in part to the Unaka defense as the Lady Rangers stayed hot shooting the ball. Unaka outscored KACHEA 31-10 over the final two periods.
Sierra Wright led all scorers with 14 points, while Katlyn Weaver had 11 points. Kennedy Moorelcok and Hannah Tipton had six points apiece. Sarah Tipton added five points.
Unaka 65, KACHEA 49 (Boys)
An explosive third quarter made all the difference as the Rangers took the victory. After holding a slim 11-8 lead at the end of the first quarter, Unaka was unable to get any breathing room with a 24-22 advantage at the half.
However, Colton Chambers and Rangers got things clicking offensively by outscoring the Wildcats 20-9 in the third quarter. From there, the Rangers held on for the victory.
Chambers fired 20 points in the win. Kyler Lewis and Joe Searfoss had 13 and 11 points, respectively.
Heritage 53, Happy Valley 50 (Girls)
The Lady Warriors were unable to hold off a late charge in the fourth quarter in a loss to Heritage at the Heritage Christmas Classic on Monday.
The Warriors, who led 30-24 at the half, saw the Lady Mountaineers score 20 points in the final quarter while only adding seven points of their own.
Kalee Johnson led the way with 21 points, while Bayley McGee scored eight points. Kenzie Davis tossed in six points for the Lady Warriors.
Happy Valley plays at 3 p.m., on Tuesday to wrap up the tournament.
