It was a clean sweep for Cloudland on Monday night.
The Lady ‘Landers pulled away in the second half to take a 66-44 victory over Johnson County, while a late run propelled the ‘Landers to a 57-45 win over the Longhorns.
The varsity opener saw both girls teams struggle early offensively. The Lady Longhorns ended the quarter on a 4-0 run to take a 12-10 lead into the second quarter. Cloudland saw Lisa Ellis drain a 3-pointer to push CHS into the lead, and Megan Lunsford scored three straight points as the Lady ‘Landers had a 22-17 advantage. Johnson and Ellis added points to give CHS a 27-22 lead at the break.
The third quarter saw a quick 6-0 Lady ‘Lander run push the lead to double-digits, and Shian Strickland helped Cloudland hold a 46-32 lead at the end of the quarter. From there, it was all Cloudland as they cruised to the win.
Ellis had 21 points to lead all scorers, while Strickland added 17 points. Lunsford finished with 12 points.
In the boys’ game, the Longhorns took an early 7-2 lead before Jesse Potter and Colby BIrchfield hit shots to even the game. Cloudland took an 11-8 lead at the end of one with four straight points to end the quarter.
The second quarter saw the teams trade points before a 9-3 Longhorn run gave Johnson County a 25-21 advantage at the half.
Potter drained a 3-pointer mid third quarter to pull Cloudland within one, but a 9-0 Johnson County run ran the lead back to eight points. However, Potter and Birchfield hit the final two shots of the period to close the gap to 35-32 at the end of three.
The fourth quarter saw Cloudland return the favor with a 10-0 run of their own – including a huge 3-pointer from Josh Blair. That set the stage for the ‘Landers to take the lead, and CHS held on late to secure the win.
Preston Benfield led the way with 17 points, while Potter had 15 points. Birchfield added 14 points, and Blair finished with nine points.
Bud Icenhour led the Longhorns with 19 points.
