
Hampton left it all on the field on Wednesday.
The Bulldogs saw the season come to a close in the Class A sectionals at Coalfield as Hampton dropped a heartbreaking 4-3 extra-inning contest and fell 11-7 in the second game.
In the first game, Coalfield took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Hampton answered in a big way in the third as Colby Clark hit a home run that also plated Brock Shelby to tie the game at 2-2.
After the Yellow Jackets took a 3-2 lead in the fourth on a Blake Hester homerun, Hampton evened things up in the sixth as Clark scored off a Coalfield balk.
Neither team was able to break onto the board in the seventh forcing extra innings. In the bottom of the eighth, Hester put the ball in play that allowed Bo Wilson to score and give the Yellow Jackets the win.
Clark was 2-for-4 at the plate with two RBIs. Eli Henson and Shelby each added a hit.
On the mound, Clark struck out nine batters and allowed just two earned runs on five hits.
Coalfield’s Waylon Burgess struck out 19 batters in 7.2 innings of work and allowed two earned runs on four hits.
In the second game, the Bulldogs never backed down.
After the Yellow Jackets scored two runs in the top of the first, Hampton got a run back as Jayden Kuhn hit a single that allowed Clark to score.
Coalfield scored two runs in the second and one in the third to take a 5-1 lead into the bottom of the third. Hampton countered with a run in the home side of the third as Eli Henson hit a double that allowed Clark to score.
After the Yellow Jackets countered with two more runs in the top of the fourth, Cash Royston hit a single that allowed Brayden Otey to cross home plate. Hampton added another run in the fifth as Shelby scored off a Memphis Nave hit to trim the Coalfield lead to 7-4.
Over the sixth and seventh innings, Coalfield pushed the lead to 11-4, but the Bulldogs battled back once again in the bottom of the seventh.
Clark and Shelby scored after Kuhn put the ball in play, and Henson scored after Kasey Gilbert put the ball in play.
Hampton, however, was unable to continue the rally.
Henson went 3-for-4 with an RBI, while Kuhn had two hits and two RBI. Clark finished with two hits. Nave ended the game with a hit and an RBI.
Royston and Shelby each had a hit.
