For three quarters, Hampton was in a fight to stay perfect in district play before delivering the knockout punch in the final eight minutes.

Hampton picked up 61-50 win at University High on Saturday to move to 5-0 in District 1-A play. The Lady Bulldogs scored early and often to cruise to a 60-21 win over the Lady Bucs.

In the boys’ game, it was a back-and-forth battle.

The Bucs scored the game’s first six points before Charlie Buttler and Wyatt Lyons responded with back-to-back buckets for the Bulldogs. That started a 10-3 run for HHS as Hampton took their first lead of the game on a Lyons’ jumper. The Bulldogs maintained a 12-11 lead at the end of the period and extended that to a five-point advantage in the opening minutes of the second. The Bucs, however, wouldn’t go quietly as they battled back with a 7-0 run to regain the lead midway through the period. The teams traded shots as Hampton held a 30-28 lead at the half.

In the third quarter, Hampton begun to get some breathing room as Jose Velazquez scored six points in the first four minutes of the second half. UH, however, closed back within two points with 2:28 to play. Hampton ended the quarter on a 9-2 run to take a 49-40 lead into the final eight minutes.

The Bulldogs pulled away with a 6-2 run to extend the lead to 12 points in the fourth. Hampton secured the win at the free-throw line down the stretch.

Velazquez had 17 points to pace all scorers. Lyons added 12 points, while Butler tallied 11 points. Dru Owens had nine points in the win.

The Lady Bulldogs left no doubt.

Megan Garland and Shy Tuelle gave Hampton an early 4-0 lead, and both hit shots that helped spark a 17-2 run to end the first quarter as HHS held a 21-6 advantage after a quarter of play. The Lady Bulldogs scored the first 11 points of the second quarter with a spark from Alexus Grubbs and was never challenged the rest of the way. Hampton led 39-10 at the half.
