Cyclones edged at Unicoi, Lady Cyclones shake off slow start

The Lady Cyclones had to shake off a slow start. However, they found their groove in the second half.

Elizabethton used a strong second half to take a 79-45 win over Unicoi County on Tuesday night. The Cyclones, however, were unable to get past the Blue Devils as they fell 54-47.

The Lady Cyclones opened the game to a 15-10 lead in the first quarter. A late second quarter run pushed Elizabethton to a double-digit lead as they outscored Unicoi 26-14 in the quarter.

From there, it was all Elizabethton.

Kayla Marosites led the way with 26 points and 16 rebounds, while Emily Kiser added 17 points. Kelci Marosites scored 14 points in the game.

The boys’ game saw teams trade shots early as Dylan Putman drained a buzzer beater shot to push Unicoi to an 11-10 lead after a quarter of play. Bo Pless knocked down shots in the second quarter for the Cyclones, but the Blue Devils maintained a 26-23 lead at the break.

Michael Robinson and Pless along with Teve Mushayamunda added shots in the third quarter to tie the game at 35-35. However, another Putnam basket gave Unicoi County a 40-37 lead at the end of the third quarter.

The Cyclones stayed within a possession throughout the quarter, but were unable to get back in front of the Blue Devils before time expired.

Pless led Elizabethton with a double-double of 21 points and 10 rebounds. Alex Norwood scored 10 points in the game.

Elizabethton will travel to Happy Valley on Friday night.
