Elizabethton was on the wrong side of a heartbreaker on Tuesday night.
The Cyclones dropped a 63-61 double overtime decision to Sullivan South in the District 1-AA Championship game at Sullivan East. South took the win on a last-second shot from Cole Layne.
Elizabethton is set to open the Region 1-AA tournament with a home game against South Greene.
On Tuesday, it was a back-and-forth battle worth as both squads fought for the title.
Elizabethton jumped out to a 10-3 lead in the first quarter and maintained a 12-7 advantage at the end of the first quarter. The Cyclones kept the foot to the pedal as they extended the lead to 28-17 at the half.
South, however, continued to battle.
The Rebels trimmed six points off the EHS lead in the third quarter and then hit a shot with just over four seconds remaining to force overtime. After South jumped out in the first overtime, Elizabethton answered the call and Donta Earnest forced a second overtime with a pair of free throws with 1.1 seconds on the clock.
In the second overtime, South jumped out before the Cyclones reeled them back in. Jake Roberts hit two free throws with just over 30 seconds remaining to tie the game, but South answered in the closing seconds with Layne’s game winner.
Nico Ashley had 15 points to lead Elizabethton. Roberts finished with 13 points. William Willocks scored 11 points.
Camden Necessary scored 18 points to lead South’s efforts.
