Cyclones take win at Central; Lady Cyclones fall in heartbreaking fashion

The Elizabethton boys jumped out early at Sullivan Central.

The Cyclones never trailed as they picked up a 59-50 Three Rivers Conference win at Sullivan Central on Friday night.

In the girls’ game, the Lady Cyclones fell on the wrong side of a buzzer-beater in a 54-52 decision to the Lady Cougars.


In the boys’ game, Elizabethton scored the first nine points of the game and then held on for a 12-8 lead after a quarter of play. EHS maintained the advantage for most of the second quarter and held a 24-17 lead at the half.

From there, the Cyclones were able to keep Central at bay to take the win.

Donta Earnest led Elizabethton with 15 points. William Willocks and Jordan Haynes added 11 points apiece.

In the girls’ game, the Lady Cyclones looked poised to hand Central their first loss against competition from the state of Tennessee.

Elizabethton took a 16-15 lead in the first eight minutes of the game and then pushed the advantage to 25-22 at the half.

In the third quarter, the Cyclones pushed the lead out to 15 points. However, Central took advantage of EHS turnovers to trim the lead back to six points going to the fourth.

Elizabethton maintained the advantage for most for the fourth quarter before the Lady Cougars jumped in front with just under two minutes to play.

Kaylen Shell tied the game with 44 seconds setting the stage for Sullivan Central’s heroics as Jaelyn West scored on a putback as time expired.

Morgan Headrick led the way with 19 points, while Shell finished with nine points.
