Cyclones unable to advance past East

Elizabethton was unable to weather Sullivan East on Tuesday.

The Cyclones saw their season come to a close with a 43-38 loss to Sullivan East in the Region 1-AA basketball semifinals.


EHS took an early lead as Hayden Townsend, Alex Norwood and Eric Wilson hit shots to give the Cyclones a 6-2 lead early on. Corey Russell and Norwood helped break up a Patriot run as the game went to the second quarter knotted at 10-10.

The teams traded shots in the second period, including a trey from Michael Robinson, as the game was tied at 17-17 at the half.

Wilson and Russell pushed Elizabethton to a four-point lead quickly to open the second half, but East’s Gavin Grubb answered to tie the game. After the teams traded points, Elizabethton took a 28-26 lead going into the fourth quarter.

In the fourth quarter, Grubb and the Patriots pushed the lead to eight points. However, Russell and Robinson knocked down 3-pointers to close the gap to 37-34. The Cyclones, however, were unable to get back in front.

Russell led Elizabethton with 10 points. Norwood had nine points, while Townsend added seven points. Robinson tallied six points.

Grubb finished with 17 points.
