Cyclones Upset Top-Seeded Falcons To Advance To Championship

Elizabethton held on for an upset on Saturday afternoon.

The Cyclones jumped out early and then fended off a Volunteer rally to take a 74-70 victory over the top-seeded Falcons in the District 1-3A semifinals.

With the win, Elizabethton earned a spot in the District 1-3A Championship game against Unicoi County which is set for Tuesday evening at Volunteer.

Elizabethton jumped out early with a 9-0 run to open the game. Seth Carter hit a pair of 3-pointers as five Cyclones found the scorebook in the opening quarter as EHS took a 20-12 lead into the second quarter.

Jake Roberts and Nick Wilson had big second quarters as EHS pushed the lead to 18 points with just over two minutes to play in the half.

Volunteer scored the final nine points of the half to cut the Cyclone lead to 40-31.

In the third quarter, the Falcons were able to trim a bit off the EHS lead despite a back-and-forth quarter.

Elizabethton held a slim 59-55 advantage after three complete quarters.

The teams traded buckets in the final quarter, but Elizabethton was able to hold on in the closing seconds for the win.

Roberts had 20 points to pace EHS, while Carter had 14 points. Bryson Rollins and Bryce Van Huss had 12 points apiece.

Wilson added eight points.
