Elizabethton-GP tabbed Girls’ Game of the Year



For the Carter County Sports Girls’ Game of the Year, it was none other then one with high stakes.

Elizabethton’s thrilling 48-44 victory over Gatlinburg-Pittman in the Girls’ Class AA Sectional captured the girls’ game of the year in the Best of Carter County Sports awards.

Kayla Marosites scored 17 of Elizabethton’s 18 second-half points to power the Lady Cyclones to a state tournament berth inside a packed Treadway Gymnasium.

The teams traded points early as Melenda Perry drained a 3-pointer. A quick 8-0 Elizabethton run sparked by buckets from Perry and Emily Kiser before Emily Schubert and Marosites capped off the run.

The Lady ‘Landers answered with a run of their own as they closed the gap to one point. Four Schubert points gave Elizabethton a 21-16 lead after a quarter of play.

EHS got a little breathing room in the second as the Lady Cyclones opened up to a seven-point lead midway through the quarter. Marosites and Schubert closed the Elizabethton scoring for the first half as the Lady Cyclone held a 30-22 lead at the half.

In the third quarter, the Lady Highlanders closed the gap with back-to-back buckets from Macie Tinker. Marosites scored the first EHS points of the frame at the 4:23 mark with a trey, but Qua Hines shot GP back into the lead with a minute left in the quarter. However, Marosites answered with a pair of free throws to regain a 37-36 lead heading to the final quarter.

After a Marosites bucket opened the fourth quarter, GP battled back into the a 41-39 lead with 3:18 to play. Marosites, however, answered for the Lady Cyclones with six straight points – including a pair of free throws with 31.7 seconds remaining.

Tinker pulled the Lady Highlanders within a point with 17.7 seconds on the clock. Elizabethton saw Marosites push the lead back to three points n the other end, and Kelci Marosites iced the game with a steal and free throw with five seconds remaining to send the Lady Cyclones to Murfreesboro.

Ka. Marosites tallied 24 points in the win, while Perry had 10 points. Kiser had seven points in the game. Schubert scored six points.

Tinker and Hines had 17 and 16 points, respectively, to lead GP.
