Elizabethton Wins Double OT Thriller In District 1-AA Semifinals

It was a thrilling battle in Elizabethton.

The Cyclones took a 72-63 double-overtime victory over Sullivan South in the District 1-AA semifinals inside Treadway Gymnasium.


Elizabethton advanced to the District 1-AA Championship game at Sullivan East against the Patriots.

It was an incredibly tight battle from the opening tip.

After South took an 11-9 lead after eight minutes of play, Elizabethton raced out to an eight-point lead midway through the quarter.

The Rebels, however, closed the gap to 20-16 at the half.

The teams traded shots throughout the third quarter, and the teams swapped the lead in the final quarter.

Nick Wilson pushed EHS ahead with just over three minutes to play, but South tied the game after a frantic final minute including a Rebel shot at the buzzer from Nick Ellege to force overtime.

South held a three-point lead late in the first overtime period, but Jake Roberts cooly knocked down three straight free throws with 11 seconds that ended up forcing the second overtime.

In the second overtime period, Elizabethton’s William Willocks came to life as he scored 10 points in the second extra period and EHS was able to pull away for the win.

Roberts had 26 points to lead Elizabethton, while Willocks had 22 points.

Wilson had 14 points for the Elizabethton cause.
