Friday Round-up: HV, Unaka win two; EHS girls bounce back

Happy Valley 56, Cloudland 39 (boys)
The Warriors took care of business in a Carter County clash at the Kelly Services Christmas Tournament at Sullivan North.

HV jumped out to a 12-9 lead after a quarter of play, and saw James Harmon and Bryce Carter combine for 15 second-quarter points to take a 34-22 lead at the half.

Cloudland, who was down three starters in the game, was unable to mount a rally in the second half as the Warriors held on for the win.

James Harmon had 11 points to lead the Warriors, while Dylan Willis had nine points. Noah Stevens had eight points in the win.

Cloudland was paced by Dillon Johnson’s 11 points, while Elijah Blair had 10 points. Robert Leeper added eight points for CHS.

Happy Valley 37, West Ashley (S.C.) 32 (girls)
The Lady Warriors continued to stay hot in the Carolina Invitational in Charleston.

Happy Valley advanced to Saturday’s Island Division Championship game against Greer (S.C.).
Adrienne Hengar led the way with 14 points off of her record breaking performance on Thursday night. Shalyn Whitson added 13 points, and Olivia Absher had seven points.

Elizabethton 61, Letcher Co. (Ky) 53 (girls)
The Lady Cyclones capitalized on a quick start to take a win on the second day of the Daytona Beach Sunshine Classic.

Elizabethton’s Kaylen Shell scored eight points in the first quarter to propel EHS to an 18-7 lead after the Lady Cyclones held Letcher County to just one field goal. In the second quarter, EHS doubled up Letcher County again to take a 32-14 lead into the locker room at half.

From there, it was all Elizabethton.

Morgan Headrick finished with 17 points to lead Elizabethton, while Shell finished with 12 points. Torrie Roberts had nine points.

Unaka 51, Stratford 33 (girls)
The Lady Rangers pulled away in the fourth quarter in their second game at the Sgt. York Southeastern Christmas Invitational at York Institute on Friday.

After Unaka held a slim 5-4 lead after a quarter of play, UHS pushed the lead to 19-11 at the break. The teams played even through the third quarter.

The Lady Rangers left no doubt in the fourth by outscoring Stratford 19-9 in the stanza spurred by seven points from Cydney Forney.

Macy Ensor led the way with 12 points. Savannah Tipton had 11 points for Unaka, Jada Whitehead added 10 points.

Unaka 54, Greenback 43 (boys)
The Rangers won their fourth straight game on Friday at the Berean Christian Christmas Tournament in Knoxville.

Isaac Hill had 17 points to lead the way for the Rangers, while John Ramsey added 16 points. Ryan Johnson scored 15 points for Unaka.
