Girls’ Region Recap: Elizabethton, Cloudland, Unaka Advance

Region 1-AA Tournament
Elizabethton 54, Cumberland Gap 29
The Lady Cyclones overcame a slow start to roll to a win in the opening game of the Region 1-AA tournament.

After trailing 8-5 at the end of the first quarter and 16-13 at the half, Elizabethton turned up the heat. EHS outscored the Lady Panthers 19-5 in the third quarter to open up a double-deficit lead and never looked back.

Kaylen Shell and Kaitlin Bailey had 12 points apiece, while Morgan Headrick tallied 10 points in the win.

Elizabethton will look to earn a spot in the Region 1-AA Championship and also a substate berth on Monday as they take on South Greene at 6p at Grainger Co.


Region 1-A Tournament
Cloudland 51, Washburn 30
Cloudland wasted no time jumping out on Friday night.

The Lady ‘Landers rolled to a 15-4 lead in the first quarter and pushed the advantage to 29-7 at the half.

From there, the outcome was never in doubt as Cloudland controlled the game from start to finish.

Leah Birchfield led Cloudland with 13 points, while Gracie Freeman tallied nine points in the win. Jasmine Birchfield had eight points.

Cloudland is one game away from the Region 1-A title game and a substate berth. The Lady ‘Landers take on Cosby on Monday at 7:30p in Region 1-A semifinals at Walters State.

Unaka 48, Greenback 27
The Lady Rangers used a second quarter to take the lead and never looked back to advance to the Region 1-A semifinals.

After trailing 8-6 at the end of the first quarter, Unaka outscored Greenback 10-3 in the second quarter to take a 16-11 lead into the half. UHS followed that up by outscoring the hosts 20-7 in the third to take full control of the game.

Lyndie Ramsey had 21 points to pace the Lady Rangers, while Macy Ensor had eight points. Jada Whitehead added six points.

The Lady Rangers will take on North Greene in Monday’s semifinals at 6p at Walters State.

Cosby 66, Hampton 38
The Lady Bulldogs were unable to overcome a 15-2 run to end the first quarter on Friday night.

Hampton was staying neck-and-neck with the top seed from District 2 until the run at the end of the quarter gave Cosby a 28-9 lead. The Lady Eagles maintained a 40-17 lead at the half.

The Lady Bulldogs tried to make a run late but was unable to recover from the early deficit and extend their season.

Hannah Collins had 11 points to lead the way for Hampton, while Hazen Brumitt had six points. Destini Milhorn finished with five points.
