After tough road losses on Tuesday night, the Hampton basketball teams bounced back in a big way.
The Lady Bulldogs and Bulldogs picked up non conference victories over Chuckey-Doak on Thursday evening. The Hampton ladies pulled away in the third quarter to take a 61-48 victory over the Lady Black Knights, while the Bulldogs rolled to an 82-50 win.
In the girls’ game, the teams traded points until Alexus Grubbs scored five straight points. Chuckey-Doak, however, answered to take a 14-13 lead after a quarter of play on a Candy Majors basket.
Hampton jumped back in front to open the second quarter with baskets from Hope Bridgeman and Shy Tuelle, but the Lady Black Knights answered to take a 25-22 advantage at the break.
The second half saw Hampton begin to pull away as Megan Garland scored the first two Lady Bulldog baskets to open the half. After Chuckey-Doak pulled out to a four-point advantage, Hampton ended the quarter on a 16-5 run to take a 46-37 lead into the fourth.
With baskets from Grubb and Tuelle, Hampton extended the lead to double-digits early in the final quarter and never looked back.
Grubbs had a game-high 21 points, while Tuelle had 13 points. Garland finished with eight points.
Brittney Ramsey had 14 points to lead Chuckey-Doak.
In the boys’ game, Hampton saw the Black Knights take a five-point lead midway through the opening quarter. Charlie Butler and Jose Velasquez sparked a 16-0 Hampton run to end the first quarter as the Bulldogs took a 23-12 lead.
The Black Knights trimmed the lead back to eight points, but Jared Wiltshire and Wyatt Lyons knocked down shots as Hampton extended the lead to 42-24 at the half.
In the second half, the Bulldogs kept control of the game by limiting the Black Knights’ opportunities. Hampton held a 64-40 advantage at the end of the third.
Butler recorded a team-high 12 points. Nathan Norris had 10 points, while Dakota Crumley and Chris Timmons added nine points apiece.
Jared Andrews, Lyons and Velasquez tallied eight points apiece.
Dakota Greer and Karter Maupin had 14 and 10 points, respectively, to pace the Black Knights.
