Happy Valley came out on the winning side of a thrilling county clash on Wednesday night.
The Warriors used a Jake Surcey bucket to take a 54-53 win over Hampton on Warrior Hill. In the girls’ game, Hampton took a 58-35 victory over the Lady Warriors.
The boys’ game was a back-and-forth battle from the opening tip. After HV ended the first quarter up 18-10, Hampton continued to stay within striking distance. The Warriors held a slim 30-25 lead at the half.
The Bulldogs came out of the locker room on a mission in the third quarter – outscoring HV 16-7 in the frame – to take a 41-37 advantage into the final quarter.
In the final stanza, the teams continued to battle, and Surcey gave HV the lead with just over a minute left to play. Hampton trimmed the lead back to one with 16 seconds remaining off a Jordan Bentley trey. Hampton was unable to connect on a last second shot as the Warriors held on for the win.
Bryce Carter had 17 points to lead HV. Surcey tallied 14 points, while Brayden Sams had nine points.
Dru Owens had 13 points to pace the Bulldogs. Jordan Bentley had 12 points.
In the girls’ game, Hampton jumped out early and never looked back.
The Lady Bulldogs took a 20-7 lead in the first quarter, but HV didn’t go quietly as they battled back to cut into the lead in the second quarter. Hampton led 28-18 at the half.
In the third quarter, Hampton outscored the Lady Warriors 21-9 to regain complete control.
Shy Tuelle had 24 points to lead Hampton while Kinzey Hill had 10 points. Kayci Royston and Stephanie Campbell had seven points apiece.
Kate Roberts led HV with 12 points, and Tianna Long scored seven points for the Lady Warriors.
